What is CPD for electricians?

The short definition

CPD is any structured learning that maintains or improves your professional competence, recorded in a way that someone else can review. For an electrician that spans regulation updates, manufacturer training, toolbox talks, technical reading and formal qualifications.

The distinguishing feature is the record. An afternoon spent reading Amendment 2 counts only if you logged what you read, when, and what changed in your practice as a result.

Who actually asks for it

Competent person scheme operators are the main audience. NICEIC and NAPIT both expect the qualified supervisor to demonstrate ongoing development at assessment, and the ECS card renewal process increasingly leans on the same evidence.

What counts, and what does not

Formal training with an assessment is the strongest evidence, because the hours and the outcome are both documented. Informal learning still counts, but it needs a reflective note to be useful.
