CPD points for electricians, explained

Continuing Professional Development is the record you keep of how your competence stays current. For electricians it is the difference between a scheme assessment that takes twenty minutes and one that turns into a follow-up visit. This page explains what CPD is, how much is expected, and what evidence actually holds up.

The basics

What CPD actually is

A structured, dated record of learning that keeps your technical knowledge aligned with current standards.

It is a record, not a qualification

CPD is not a badge you pass. It is a log of activity — what you did, when, how long it took and what you took from it. Assessors read the log, not the intention.

Hours are the common currency

Most UK schemes and professional bodies count hours rather than abstract points. A one-day course is typically six to seven recorded hours.

Regulation change drives it

Amendments to BS 7671, new guidance on EV charging and changes to inspection practice are the most commonly logged CPD subjects in the trade.

Your scheme will ask for it

Competent person scheme assessments, employer audits and some insurers all ask what training you have completed in the last twelve months.

How Certi counts

How our certificates satisfy an assessor

  1. 01

    Complete the course

Every unit is tracked, and the assessment must be passed before a certificate is released.

  2. 02

    Certificate is issued

The certificate states the course, accrediting body, CPD hours awarded and completion date.

  3. 03

    Stored in your vault

Certificates stay in your Certi vault so you can download the full year's evidence in one go.

CPD questions

Is CPD compulsory for UK electricians?+

There is no single statutory CPD quota for electricians, but competent person schemes, employers and insurers all expect evidence of continued learning. Scheme assessments routinely ask what you have done in the last twelve months.

How many CPD hours should I record each year?+

Thirty hours a year is the figure most UK schemes and professional bodies work to, with a mix of technical study, regulation updates and on-site learning.

Do Certi Academy certificates count towards CPD?+

Yes. Every completed Certi Academy course issues a dated certificate stating the CPD hours awarded and the accrediting body, which you can present at a scheme assessment.

What counts as CPD besides formal courses?+

Toolbox talks, manufacturer training, reading regulation updates, mentoring an apprentice and structured reading all count, provided you record the date, activity and hours.
